Search for groups or forums where people talk about their business, share tips, dos and dont's and are really willing to help newly interested ones start their own business. After reading the forum posts you may realize that this work from home business opportunity is not what you are looking for. Save yourself a lot of time and effort weeding out business opportunities that are not what you thought they were.
When you do find a small business opportunity you are interested in, request information. How willing are they to train you or provide on going support. How long have they been in business, what kind of reputation do they have. Talk to people actual working the business, learn from their mistakes as well as their successes. The company your are interested in joining should be willing to put you in contact with other business owners, before you sign on the dotted line. You may want your lawyer or accountant to review any legal and financial documents involved. The bottom line is the decision is yours to make you can gather all the facts take your time and make a wise decision.
